International Card Use

International Card Use

Emburse Cards can be used internationally anywhere Visa or Mastercard is accepted. Review the information below before traveling or making purchases in another country.

Using Your Card Internationally

You do not need to notify Emburse Cards before traveling.

However, enabling transaction notifications is recommended to reduce the risk of temporary suspension due to unusual activity, such as purchases in unfamiliar locations, high foreign transaction amounts, or high-risk merchants.

You can enable notifications in your personal settings. For more information, see Personal Settings.

Foreign Transaction And Cross-Border Fees

Fees depend on the currency used for the transaction and the country of the merchant’s payment processor.

Transactions In Your Account Currency

If you make a purchase in the same currency listed in your Emburse Cards account, there is no foreign transaction fee. However, a cross-border fee may apply if the merchant’s system is linked to a different country.

A US-based card used in the Bahamas for a charge in USD does not incur a foreign transaction fee. A cross-border fee of 0.80% + $0.30 applies.

Transactions In A Different Currency

If you make a purchase in a currency different from the one listed in your Emburse Cards account, a foreign transaction fee applies in addition to the cross-border fee.

A US-based card used in the Bahamas for a charge in BSD incurs a 0.20% foreign transaction fee plus the cross-border fee, for a total of 1% + $0.30.

The combined foreign transaction and cross-border fees for transactions made in a different currency are:

  • US-based accounts: 1% + $0.30 per transaction
  • EU-based accounts: 1% + €0.30 per transaction
  • UK-based accounts: 1% + £0.30 per transaction

Fees are billed to your account balance as a single total amount during your billing period.

Currency Conversion Method

Foreign currency transactions are converted using the interbank exchange rate.
